Writer's Block: Karaoke Time

Name five songs to which you know all the lyrics. (Better yet, sing them.)
I'm guessing camp songs don't count ;) My musical repertoire - at least for what I know by heart - is probably mostly Girl Scout songs, camp songs,Disney, tv themes, and stuff from musicals...so...let me think...

Wait! Does "Still Alive" from Portal count? No? Damn.

Um....well, I will not embarrass myself or torture anyone's ears with singing (Okay, I may not be that bad, but...I'm not good, we'll say that). But if LJ and YouTube cooperate, I can post videos...and no, in order to be extra-nerdy, they may not be the actual music videos...

!) Linkin Park - Iridescent

2) LFO - Every Other Time

3) Cage The Elephant - Ain't No Rest For Wicked

4) The Delgados - Woke From Dreaming (Yes, I am pimping my own, old WHR amv here)

5) The Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling

And for a bonus, Hare Hare Yukai and the Algorithm March as well. Why? Because I was listening to Haruhi music (and Matchbox 20 and Linkin Park) while thinking about this list and because the Algorithm March is cool.

Hare Hare Yukai

Algorithm March

One day, they will realize it only encourages my insanity. Today, thankfully, is not that day.

The drabbles below are crafted from the Drabble Maker found here: http://prillalar.com/drabbles/

I apologize in advance. (I did refrain from using the words "hump" and "obnoxiously" -  but I have it on good authority characters will then "hump obnoxiously" if you aren't careful. Then again, that sounds like a typical day in fandom to start with...)

The Heartwarming Terror of the Snow - My Little PonyCollapse )

yeah...how about another fandom?

The Battle For The Blanket - Hardy/DrewCollapse )

Ouch. I don't think that's normally how love is expressed.

And, one more...

The Miracle of the Raven - WHRCollapse )

That one especially amuses me.

Writer's Block: Girl Scouts' Day

What is your favorite Girl Scout cookie flavor?
Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Patties. And I can't wait for mine to be delivered. :D

I love eating the cookies but I most definitely do not miss selling them. (But I do miss other things about Scouts)

I live

Honestly, I've kinda pulled away from fandom and most things that gave me any sort of internet presence. Life got busy, and complicated, and instead of escaping into writing, as I did during my senior year of undergrad, I went the other way. I tried to cut writing out of my life...and fandom, etc, kinda fell with it, though not entirely. Obviously, I did put out snippets of stuff - there are drabbles on my LJ to attest to this - but, mostly, I was done.

I'm not sure why. Maybe it was because of the fact I had thrown myself into writing that final year. My mother was diagnosed with colon cancer on the day I moved back to school for my senior year of undergrad. I did the smart thing - smart for me - and actually got myself involved with the counseling center pretty quickly. If I hadn't, well...that year probably would've been much worse. I threw myself into schoolwork and this (in my mind) crazy awesome epic Witch Hunter Robin fanfic I was going to create  -which became "Adjustments" - and slowed down on my crazy awesome epic Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew fanfic I'd planned.

In December, we learned that the odds were...not good. In January, only a few days after I had decided to inform all of my professors about what was going on in my personal life, my mother passed away. (In an awkward moment, months later, I learned that no one had ever told my Criminal Justice adviser that my mother had died, though almost everyone else on campus seemed to know.)

My response to this was to throw myself into "Adjustments" and schoolwork further. I was damned if I would let this stop me and I refused to take the semester off. I didn't want to be a "Super Senior" - it was a bit a fear of the stigma and a bit of the fact I have a tendency to hold myself to ridiculous standards of perfection at times.

At the end of the year, I was burnt out. Working at camp after school was a painful, healing process, as it was Girl Scout camp and my mother was the one who got me involved in Scouts and who was my troop leader. She was the reason I loved and loathed Girl Scouts of the USA at the same time. But that's another story.

Anyway...the burnout stayed. And when I started writing again, it felt...wrong. Like I would get swept away in it. And I was terrified of that. Terrified, actually, of the idea that maybe my mom's cancer and my avoidance of what had been going on was what got me to produce what would be the highlight of my writing - a fanfic that, in honesty, may not be all that exceptional (though my betas assured me it was one of my better fics) - and that my writing would fizzle out there. Or worse, that my writing wouldn't free those emotions, but would wrap them tighter around me, all of that grief, fear, avoidance, everything negative that I was spouting out to a counselor weekly and still carried with me.

So I didn't really fight it when I realized I no longer wanted to carry a pen everywhere. When I realized that I was pushing away story ideas, and making myself forget them. Because I was afraid.

I still am, actually. Writing, while it always seemed a part of me, felt much like art or music did - something I enjoyed that frustrated me because I could never actually quite communicate what I saw/heard/felt/believed. And since writing was what I was best at, I was arrogant enough to think fanfic was enough practice, and that I would never be able to produce anything original beyond mediocre poems, and okay, that's fine. Besides, my mom and teachers believed in me and it made me fear I was supposed to try to be this great author or poet and I was convinced I was not.

I still may never be. And I don't know what I will write for fandom. I have fics that are unfinished that I don't know if I can complete. What I know, however, is that David is right. He has regularly badgered me and told me that it's my own stubbornness and fear holding me back. He told me if I don't want to write, that's fine. But that I need to sort that out for myself, and I was actively avoiding the issue.

He was right.  So I am trying to sort this out. And trying to live without any expectations of myself at the moment, or my writing, except to note that I am finding out if this is something I still enjoy and want to pursue. I've started to feel that old itch for a pen in my hand and paper nearby, no matter what the time of day or night and what else may be going on. Does that mean I'll keep it up? We'll see. I'm still scared shitless by it.

But I'm going to try to sort it out. And on that note, this post is done, except for an apology for the meandering nature of it.

Finally finished playing Portal (I got distracted by Dark Fall, which I should now go back and finish. Lol, I distract from games easily). I am now on Portal 2. It is just as awesome as the first. (Even if I've had it spoiled because David played it while I was in the room. But eh, I was spoiled on Portal as well and it didn't affect my enjoyment). That is all I really felt like saying.
RIP Diana Wynne Jones and Brian Jacques. You will be missed. (Although I will NOT miss the hunger cravings from all of the food porn in the Redwall books I read when I was younger)

So I don't know these authors

But I don't care. community.livejournal.com/sf_drama/3206565.html < - Pretty awesome, IMHO.

Because this was originally intended to be a mostly lighthearted journal and otherwise I don't have anything lighthearted right now.

I'm starting it with the drabbles "A Green-Stained Floor," "The Eye Exam," "Green," and "Painful Empathy"- all of these were originally posted on this LJ and are lurking somewhere in the older entries. I'm really hoping to re-watch the series soon and to start writing more.

I also posted one of my fanpoems for WHR on FFN...mainly because I've never posted one there before and I could actually stand re-reading that one.

(I'd also love to write for BECK, but I don't really know if I could manage that one)

Also hoping to start writing Hardy/Drew again, but we'll see how it goes. Gotta ease back into fandom, right?

It's been a long time...

...how have you been?

You may shoot me if you want for that Portal 2 reference, especially since I haven't played the first Portal game yet. (Not for lack of wanting, more for lack of time management and getting shit done).

This blog has kinda fallen by the wayside. 2 jobs and school will do that. And I'm sucky @ time management and remembering my LJ password.

Fandom-wise...I'm finally starting to get back to the HDA board again. May write some light-hearted fanfic for HB/ND in the future (And I am excited about the crossover graphic novel - shaddup, I know how goofy I get about my crossover materials!)

I really haven't been reading/writing fanfic as much lately...was actually on a burn-out from reading/writing in general for awhile. But that's changing, finally. I fell in love with the Millenium trilogy and The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane is really pulling me in (got it for Christmas - had never heard of it and am enjoying it immensely).

So...really, this was just to let you all know I'm still around, just...not very active. I know there's at least one fanfic I need to write, perhaps two, that are long overdue (yadre, you owe me as well!) So hopefully those get done this year.

OH! And if anyone wants a good, slice-of-life anime mixed with music anime, mixed with an excellent dub job and you haven't discovered BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad yet...well, what the hell is wrong with you? Go watch it!
